Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding his Loop Tour for the first time during his concert Saturday in Philadelphia, following the removal of Macklemore as an opening act and the departure of several other performers.
“I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician,” Sheeran told the crowd at Lincoln Financial Field, saying the situation had placed him in the middle of a debate over free speech and the conflict involving Israel and Palestine.
Sheeran described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable” and said he was heartbroken by the loss of civilian and children’s lives. He also said he has been speaking with people from different perspectives and listening because he believes he still has more to learn.
The singer previously said Macklemore’s removal was not his decision, but that of the tour promoter. According to Sheeran, venues had warned that they could cancel upcoming shows if Macklemore remained on the lineup.
Following his removal, Macklemore announced that he would donate his $1 million in tour earnings to six organizations providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians. He also called on others to contribute.
Sheeran ended his remarks by telling fans that his concerts remain a place where people with different views can come together through music.
